CHAPTER FIVE

After a restless night where he couldn’t get some decent deep sleep, Xavier was on his second pot of coffee to help him get through the piles of invoices, various requests, client concerns, and other issues. A lot piled up when both of them were gone close to two weeks. He never realized how much paperwork could stack up if no one was around to clear through it.

One of his guides created a list and map of several larger tremors in the area, which was normal for him to track them for everyone. He noted some of the local geologists discussed the possibilities of a larger quake. With these rumors happening every once in a while and nothing major occurring, Xavier set it aside. If a big one happened, they would handle any damage both on their land and around Cantwell, Fairbanks, and Denali as needed. It would be the same with everyone else in the area.

Signing off on the checks, invoices, and other important things, he passed the folders to one of the admins who processed them. He contacted one of the handymen, Scott, who handled any type of repairs or carpentry, and requested his locks to be changed. He wanted two keys made with one placed in his hand and the other one in Coreen’s hand. With the thought of Mike duplicating his key or more, he created a new rule of them not duplicating any key anytime without direct verbal confirmation from him or Daniel. They could accept a handwritten or signed request, but must confirm it verbally. If they couldn’t reach one of them, they were to put it aside until they got it. Scott promised to type it up and hang it on the board for everyone to read before they ended the conversation.

Getting through the remainder of the paperwork, he heard a couple of doors slam open. One even banged against the wall. Lifting his gaze from the papers, Xavier narrowed his gaze as Mike stormed through the office, shoved the door shut, and dropped in a chair.

“Why did you change the schedule?” Mike demanded.

Knowing exactly what he did, Xavier took a leisurely sip of coffee to prevent himself from strangling the bastard. “What do you mean?”

“I was on for two day hikes, a simple bike tour with photography trek, and a seven-day backpacking tour,” Mike said and counted by pointing his fingers down on the desk. “Now, other guys are taking over them. What the hell? I need the extra bonus with each tour and now I get shit. I’m assigned to the damn stockroom.”

Setting the cup aside, Xavier braced his arms on the desk. “According to other guides, there are items you offer not on the itinerary list of Midnight Sun tours. Especially the long-term and overnight tours. Ones neither Daniel nor I approve.”

“Are you fucking around with me?”

“No, but you’re fucking around with our clients. Clients who are paying for professionally guided tours. Look, we get our license from the US National Park Service so we can conduct business within Denali.
